My dad wrecked his Mustang.

2010 GT. He hit a patch of ice, and slammed into another car (everyone is okay, no scratches or anything), but now, the auto body shop is saying that it's going to cost 10k to fix the car.

Airbags deployed and everything, but most of the damage is to the driver front side. Suspension seems intact, and the engine wasn't damaged. It was even able to start. Intercooler is shot though, and the car is leaking coolant.

Thing is, we don't have 10k to spend (my dad drives the old civic to work). My sister is going to college next year, and I'm finishing up college. The car has 75k miles and honestly, 10k really doesn't seem worth it. So my dad was telling me that we either strip it for parts and sell it (which we don't really have the time to do), or we donate to someplace for 500 dollars and tax credit.

Now, the rest of the car still works. The engine and the engine bay is still pretty immaculate (my dad really cleans that shit. I mean, REALLY REALLY cleans it). No rust, no dings or dents (except for the front end damage).

My dad didn't want to strip it because we just don't have the time. However, since college is almost over for me, I offered 1000 dollars to buy it from him, and he thought about it.

I was thinking that since everything crucial (engine, driveshaft, transmission, rear diff) is still intact, that other than cosmetic damage, I would have to repair the piping to the intercooler and the mounts that hold the intercooler, but then I thought that this would be a good place to learn to weld and stuff.

What do you think everyone?

Buy it and learn body work on it. There is only one way to learn.

Wait... intercooler? Is it turbo'd? Or do you mean the radiator?

I say list it for $8k on Craigslist if it runs and drives or do body work like T5killer suggested and have a small shop replace the mechanical parts

Did he not have insurance?

Cause either they pay for the repair, or they salvage title it and give him a hefty sum for a new car.

I'd say use it as a dragoning machine

Not covered for collision (since it's our fault).

I was going to see if I could possibly just replace the front with a bash bar and use it as my own hoonmobile. Also, possibly gut the interior.

Still, it shouldn't be that hard to fix. And $10k for repairs? I smell BS...

If fixed properly, it should be worth a minimum of $15k... that's what most of the 2010 GTs with 5 speeds are going for on Autotrader

This is why you get full coverage on cars that have any value. Especially newish American V8 rwd muscle cars.
